Carbon Herald just published CF Industries, JERA, And Mitsui Break Ground On World’s Largest $3.7B Blue Ammonia Plant.

Carbon Herald reports that a joint venture of CF Industries, Japanese power company JERA, and trading house Mitsui has started construction on a blue ammonia facility described as the largest of its kind. The project carries a price tag of about $3.7 billion. Blue ammonia is produced from natural gas with carbon capture applied to the associated emissions, and is being positioned as a low-carbon fuel and hydrogen carrier for markets in Japan and beyond. The three partners bring together fertilizer production expertise, power sector offtake demand, and global commodity trading reach.

Our take (Heads-up): Blue ammonia’s climate value depends on capture rates, upstream methane leakage, and the credibility of end-use combustion emissions accounting. A project of this scale is worth watching, but the headline figure matters less than the disclosed capture percentage and lifecycle numbers once operations begin. Offtake terms and pricing versus green ammonia will also shape whether this becomes a durable pathway or a transitional bet.
