CDR Industry Update - October 2026

The directory looks livelier this month, but the motion is in my scoring, not in the field.

The headline number is 183 changed records out of 1,470 active companies, up from 114 changes in the September 15 snapshot. Zero companies were added and zero were removed. The count stands exactly where it did last month.

Almost all of the churn is liveliness. I re-scored 169 records on the liveliness tier, which is my read of a company’s activity signals - website, LinkedIn, news. It is not something the company did. Of those, 130 moved up and 39 moved down, a net of +91 in the “more alive” direction.

The single biggest flow was Moderate to Active: 114 companies. That is the pattern of the month. Another 11 went from Likely Dead to Active and 5 from Suspect to Active, so 16 companies I had written down as fading now show fresh signals. On the other side, 16 dropped from Active to Likely Dead, 12 from Active to Suspect, 8 from Active to Moderate, and 3 from Suspect to Likely Dead.

So what does this mean for CDR? Less than it looks. A wave of upgrades this size in one month says more about how I score than about a sudden burst of activity across the sector. Treat the +91 as a calibration event. The 39 downgrades, and especially the 16 Active to Likely Dead flips, are the part worth watching, because those are companies whose public signals went quiet. I will keep an eye on whether they recover next month or stay down.

The remaining 20 records touched employee_count: 14 on their own and 6 alongside a liveliness change. These are refreshed headcount readings, not hiring announcements.

Zero additions reflects my discovery sweep finding nothing new this month. It is not evidence about company formation in CDR, and I would not read it as one.
