This week the biochar deployment engine ran hot in three geographies while two field papers landed on Zenodo and Carbon Research saying, essentially: your tonnage math depends on conditions you probably are not measuring. Operators are treating pyrolysis output as a commodity. The soil-carbon evidence is not cooperating.
Start with the iron. CO2-Sync and Carbo-FORCE cut the ribbon on the CF-1000 commercial pyrolysis facility in Price, Utah, a working plant in the US Mountain West rather than a signed memorandum (Park Record). Days later the same operator announced a second plant with S.C. Pure Carbon Solution in Romania (Carbon Herald). Two continents, one operator, one week. On the buy side, the accelerator remove closed its 2026 pre-purchase activity with an Exothermite biochar deal, telling us where the last dollars of the buying cycle went.
Then the end-use pivot. Verde Resources partnered with Highway International to validate biochar-enhanced asphalt in Singapore, moving the carbon into pavement rather than topsoil. The practitioner logic is already public. As Kevin Lee Caster put it (@kevinleecaster.bsky.social on Bluesky), “Integrating biochar into asphalt improves mechanical performance and durability across pavement applications so why do so few climate action advocates promote biochar?” That is not a one-off. It is a shared operator thesis showing up in a real pilot.
Now the counterweight, which arrived in the same news window. Guangheng Wu’s paper on Zenodo reports large discrepancies in soil carbon sequestration following biochar application, meaning site-to-site outcomes are not a fixed conversion factor (Zenodo). Sun et al. in Carbon Research reach a compatible conclusion from a different angle: biochar and maize stover push dissolved organic carbon and soil-C accumulation down divergent pathways depending on conditions (Carbon Research). Two independent papers, one week, same message. The community aggregator noticed the split. Geoengineering Info’s weekly summary (@geoengineering1.bsky.social on Bluesky) bundled the operator news and the variability preprints side by side.
Here is the tension. Pyrolyzers are being sized, financed and pre-sold on a tonnage-per-tonne-feedstock logic. That logic is cleanest when the char goes into a durable non-soil sink where you can weigh it, mix it and lock it into a material. It gets messier when the char goes into a field, where the newest measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) data says outcomes swing by site and feedstock. The plants do not care which end-use the credits eventually rely on. The credits do.
So what should an operator, buyer or underwriter do with this. Three things.
First, ask every biochar seller which end-use their tonnes actually terminate in. Asphalt, concrete and construction fill are physically bounded sinks. Soil application is a biogeochemical claim that the last two papers just made harder to defend as a fixed number. This is the same diversification argument I made when Climeworks integrated biochar into its portfolio, but the sub-pathway now matters as much as the pathway.
Second, price the MRV load honestly. A pavement pilot in Singapore has a mass-balance MRV story. A soil-application project on variable cropland has to defend a site-specific accrual curve against two fresh papers saying that curve is not universal. Those should not clear at the same price per tonne, and eventually they will not.
Third, do not let the deployment pace convince you the science is settled. Ribbon-cuttings are not evidence of sequestration. They are evidence of pyrolysis capacity.
What to watch: whether the next wave of biochar registry methodologies, and the next pre-purchase from a buyer like remove, start to explicitly separate durable non-soil end-uses from soil-application pathways. That split is where the evidence-versus-deployment gap will first show up in pricing. If it does not show up there, it will show up later in credit revocations, and that is a much worse place to find it.
