The policy at one glance
Isometric certified Standard v2.0 last week, and it is already the rulebook that new biochar and mineralization protocols are being written against. Not a draft. Not a consultation. The live version. It binds any project that wants to issue credits on the Isometric registry, and it tightens three things that decide operator economics: counterfactual biomass fate, leakage accounting, and durability evidence. If you run a pyrolysis plant, this is now more important to your unit economics than your feedstock contract.
The mechanism
Standard v2.0 changes what evidence an auditor will accept for a durability claim. For biochar, that means pyrolysis temperature logs, feedstock chain-of-custody, and a defensible counterfactual for what would have happened to the biomass otherwise. Rice husks piled and burned? Different counterfactual than rice husks tilled back into a paddy. The registry decides which baseline you get, and the baseline decides your tonnes.
For soil-applied char, v2.0 pushes toward measurement stacks that vendors are already repositioning to sell. The EarthOptics and C-Quester partnership on POM/MAOM soil carbon fractionation is exactly the kind of lab-grade MRV (measurement, reporting, verification) that durability annexes will demand. The MRV vendor market is betting on which standard wins.
The current state
v2.0 is in force. And its first non-Western stress test just landed. Isometric signed certification agreements with three Chinese pyrolysis operators. As Biochar Today reported, “Isometric has signed its first China-based carbon removal certification agreements with Tongao Greenchar, Vastwing Energy, and DeCarbon Tech.” Coverage of the deal structure is at Biochar Today’s writeup.
A parallel case is running in Brazil, where Embrapa and Oxyon are commercializing Amazonian-dark-earth-inspired biochar. Same registry rules, different feedstock economics, same question: does the char clear as a durable removal or get discounted to a soil amendment?
What practitioners are saying
The operational parameter registry protocols keep pushing toward is pyrolysis temperature. Biochar Today flagged that “increasing pyrolysis temperatures up to 1000 degrees Celsius enhances biochar carbon dioxide capture to 3.82 millimoles per gram while improving…” the durability profile. What temperature threshold v2.0’s biochar annex accepts as evidence of long-lived carbon determines which operators qualify at what tier. Below the threshold, credits get haircut or rejected.
Scientists get pulled in fast when protocols cite their work. David Ho (@davidho.bsky.social) noted the pattern dryly: “Oops, people who want to sell carbon removal credits have found the article and they want to talk to me about my comment.” Every protocol update triggers the same scramble to lock in favorable methodological interpretations.
And the supply-chain assumption underneath all of this is not solid. A Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems study documents the adoption gap among Southeast Asian smallholders who are supposed to be the feedstock base. v2.0’s MRV requirements assume traceability that field research says is not there yet.
The next decision point
The first credit issuance under v2.0 from Tongao Greenchar, Vastwing Energy, or DeCarbon Tech. Isometric issues, buyers price, and the issuance notice will name the annex applied and the evidence tier the auditor accepted. That is the answer no methodology PDF gives you. Watch for it in the next two quarters.
What to track
One leading indicator: the discount on v2.0 biochar tonnes versus v1.x biochar tonnes in bilateral offtake term sheets. If buyers pay a premium for v2.0 issuance, the standard is working as an integrity floor. If they do not distinguish, the rewrite was compliance theatre.
Two questions buyers should be asking every seller: which protocol version issued these tonnes, and which annex covers the durability claim. If a term sheet does not answer both, it is not a serious offtake. The registry protocol is now the product spec. Operators who treat it as paperwork will find out the hard way whose tonnes clear.
