About
Reverse Coal is a UK biochar CDR pilot operated by Lapwing Energy, the renewable energy arm of The Lapwing Estate near Doncaster. The project grows short-rotation coppice willow on rewetted lowland peatland, pyrolyses the biomass into biochar, and buries it in a patented flooded storage repository for permanent sequestration, with waste heat powering controlled environment agriculture. It was funded through Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the UK DESNZ Direct Air Capture and Greenhouse Gas Removal Innovation Programme, with the Phase 2 final report published in October 2025.
