About
Recoal AG is a Zurich-based CDR startup founded in 2023 that converts wet-waste biomass into hydrochar via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and stores the resulting carbon-rich material in underground geological formations in Switzerland for permanent sequestration. Its methodology was validated under the Rainbow Standard (formerly Riverse) in 2025, and it is planning a pilot plant for 2026 with support from the Migros Pioneer Fund and the City of Zurich’s KlimUp program.
