About
Northern Lights is a joint venture equally owned by Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies that provides commercial CO2 transport and permanent geological storage as a service from its Øygarden, Norway terminal, injecting CO2 into a reservoir 2,600 m below the North Sea seabed. Phase 1 (1.5 Mt/yr capacity) began operations in August 2025 with CO2 from Heidelberg Materials’ Brevik cement plant, and Phase 2 (expanding to 5+ Mt/yr by 2028) reached FID in March 2025 following a 15-year contract with Stockholm Exergi for 900,000 t/yr of biogenic CO2 from its BECCS facility.
